Troy Deyane Roberts

November 06, 2023

Troy Deyane Roberts, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home in San Augustine, Texas on November 1, 2023.

Troy was born to Lawson R. and Lillie Mae Roberts on November 14, 1946 in Greenback, Tennessee. As a student athlete he was a standout in basketball. However, he did not aspire to be a basketball star. He left school early and joined the United States Navy. He was a proud Vietnam veteran. He served two tours in Vietnam while assigned to the Seventh Fleet’s seaplane tender USS Currituck. He also served as a “plank owner” aboard the USS Shreveport. After the Navy he worked a number of jobs in and around Corpus Christi, Texas. Eventually he obtained a job as a tug boat chief engineer with Jackson Marine. This began a long, illustrious, and very adventurous career as a merchant marine. After he attained the title of Captain he continued to work very hard and educate himself to the point that his license‘s credentials made him into a very sought after Captain. One of his proudest accomplishments as a Captain was to be recognized as a Panama Canal Master Pilot. After some very unfortunate health issues he was forced to retire in 2011 but continued to consult for a few years afterwards. He was without a doubt a sailor through and through.

His favorite hobbies and at one point profession was flying airplanes. Once again, after attaining his initial private pilots license he continued to educate himself to the point that he became a very accomplished airplane pilot. Although his various chosen careers required him to be away from home most of the time, he loved his family very much. He always worked very hard and did an amazing job to provide.

He is survived by brother Bobby Roberts and his wife Gwen, son Troy “T.L.” Roberts and his wife Kayleigh, daughter Theresa Dyer and her husband Mike, daughter Tara Rubel and her husband Frank, and Stepdaughter Pam Campbell, grandchildren Michael Dyer, Brook, Hollie, Bayleigh, Huston Roberts, Kendall Rubel, Whitney Troy, Alivia “Tator Tot” Payne, Dakoda Payne, Chelsea and Sawyer Troy, and great grandson Koen Wilson. He had numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who he loved very much.

Troy was predeceased by his father Lawson R. Roberts, mother Lillie Mae Roberts, sister Unavee “Dusty” McClanahan, and brother Freddy Roberts.

There will be a memorial service with military honors for Troy at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine, Texas on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at 6:00. Troy’s family encourages and sincerely hopes that everyone who knew him will attend and share their "Troy/Dad/Grandfather/Brother/Uncle/War Buddy" stories.

Oh, before they turn off all the lights

I won't read you your wrongs or your rights

The time has gone

I'll tell you goodnight, close the door

Tell you I love you once more

The time has gone

So here it is

I'm not your son, you're not my father

We're just two grown men saying goodbye

No need to forgive, no need to forget

I know your mistakes and you know mine

And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud

So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes?

Don't be afraid, it's my turn

To chase the monsters away

Oh, well, I'll read a story to you

Only difference is this one is true

The time has gone

I folded your clothes on the chair

I hope you sleep well, don't be scared

The time has gone

So here it is

I'm not your son, you're not my father

We're just two grown men saying goodbye

No need to forgive, no need to forget

I know your mistakes and you know mine

And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud

So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes?

Don't be afraid, it's my turn

To chase the monsters away

Sleep a lifetime

Yes, and breathe a last word

You can feel my hand on your own

I will be the last one

So I'll leave a light on

Let there be no darkness, in your heart

But I'm not your son, you're not my father

We're just two grown men saying goodbye

No need to forgive, no need to forget

I know your mistakes and you know mine

And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud

So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes?

Don't be afraid, it's my turn

To chase the monsters away
