DORA MAE MOORE
In Loving Memory of our beautiful grandmother, Mrs. Dora Mae Moore, aka Mrs. Buttercup!
Born January 13, 1927, Mama gained her wings on Tuesday, August 22, 2023. An only child, she was raised by her grandparents, Redell and Inez Crain, after the death of her own mother in a car accident. She gave birth to her only son, George Aaron Edison, at a very young age, and he preceded her in death, as did her grandparents, her ex-husband, the only grandfather we knew, Mr. Robert “Sarge” Moore, her daughter-in-law, Barbara Ann Edison, and her grandson, George Edison II. She lived in Pineland, Lufkin, and ultimately settled in San Augustine. She held many different jobs throughout her lifetime, working as a cook and/or housekeeper, cleaning at the now PNC Bank in San Augustine, but the job she enjoyed until she retired was working for Dr. and Mrs. John Oglesbee. She considered the Oglesbee’s to be family, and Dr. Oglesbee was her physician until the day she passed. Mama was a member of Reed Chapel Baptist Church for the majority of her adult life, until becoming a Jehovah’s Witness in 2008. That day in Marshall, Texas, when she was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness, will always be special; all of her grandchildren were there to show our love and support!
Mama often expressed missing her friends, who had all preceded her in death, in particular, Mrs. Elizabeth Hicks and Mrs. Myrtle Polk. I know how grateful she was to still have family and friends, Mrs. Johnnie Ruth Price and Mrs. Jean Scott, and my mom, Mrs. Nettie Ruth Clay, to talk to often, cause if you knew Mama at all, you know she loved to talk! LOL! In all the years that they have been gone, Mama talked often about our Dad and his sweeter than life wife, my stepmom, Barbara Ann; but especially our little brother George. There is no doubt how much she missed them and I also have no doubt they are sitting around having an amazing time being back together!
Mama has left so many of us to mourn her. Her grandchildren, LaBarbara Edison, Priscilla Barnes, Valencia Price (Darrell), Angela Price and George (Toby) Jones; great-grandchildren, Sheresa Thomas, Nastashia Price, Dominique Edison (Jessica), Michael Lacy Jr., Antonio Peña, LaToya Jones (Aaron), Curtis Barnes, Portia Price, Julian Peña and Chloe Edison and 12 great-great grandchildren. There are so many more extended family members and friends that are too numerous to name. To her caregivers, Lola Miller and Simone Bratchett, we appreciate you greatly! To everyone who has reached out and expressed your love and condolences, thank you so very much!
Mama was very clear about her final wishes and we are honoring those. She only wanted to be cremated and her remains spread over our Dad’s grave. No matter the age, you’re never ready. My love for fashion, especially wearing stilettos, came from you Mama. Don’t get me started on the baking; cause I know I must have worked your nerves. It’s going to be difficult to drive down Barrett Street and know that you are no longer in that little white house, that for so many years was green. I never asked why you chose that ugly color. LOL! Take your rest my Sweet Shugah.
