WILLIAM CHARLES JONES
William Charles Jones, age 92, of League City, Texas passed away on Monday, July 8, 2024.
William C. Jones was born in Mabank, Texas on August 3rd, 1931. He is the son of Henry Mason and Lena Dixon Jones of Nacogdoches, Texas, who are now deceased.
Bill Jones grew up in San Augustine, Texas. After high school, he attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas. Upon graduation in 1951, he enrolled at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. His theological training was received at Perkins School of Theology and he graduated with a Masters of Theology in 1956. In 1987, Reverend Jones was awarded a Doctor of Divinity Degree by Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas and he also earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.
Bill has always believed that his life was a gift of grace, and meeting Johnnie Lee Odom at Lon Morris was one of those wonderful gifts. They were married on December 28, 1951 and began their life together in the ministry of the United Methodist Church. Although he was appointed as a pastor while he was still a student, he was ordained an Elder in the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1956. He has loved and served many churches during his years of being a United Methodist minister. In 1982, he was appointed to be a District Superintendent and worked to nurture and support the many pastors in his charge. In 1994, Dr. Jones became the District Superintendent of the Nacogdoches District, where he served until June of 2000 when he was granted a retired status by the Texas Annual Conference. During his career, he served on the Jurisdictional Committee on the Ordained Ministry and on a national level as a Director of the General Board of Global Ministries.
William C. Jones and Johnnie Odom Jones have been married for 72 years and have lived a beautiful life of love and service together. He is survived by his beloved wife, Johnnie and their four children, Mrs. Susan Jones Davenport, William C. Jones Jr. and wife Karen, Rebecca Jones Collins and husband, Mike, and David Mason Jones and wife Mary. He loved all of his very special grandchildren including Amanda Jones Lopez and husband Eddie, Alyssa Collins, Mitchell Collins and wife Josie, Leslie Collins Flynn and husband Daniel, and David William Jones. Great grandchildren are Lance Lopez and Mateo Lopez. Bill is also survived by his nephews Scott and Kevin Jones. He is predeceased by his loving parents, Mason and Lena Jones and his brother Robert Lynn Jones.
William Charles Jones was a man of God, and he exemplified God’s love and grace in everything he did, especially the unconditional love that he shared with his family. That love will continue on through his children and grandchildren who are so blessed to have been a part of his beautiful life.
